Why Some People Need Silence to Sleep — And Others Can Sleep Anywhere

Some brains sleep through anything. Others hear everything. Here’s why noise affects sleepers so differently — and what you can do about it.

Some people can fall asleep on planes, trains, sofas, buses, noisy hotel rooms and probably during a minor kitchen renovation.

Others can be jolted awake by a fridge hum, a ticking clock, a distant dog, a partner breathing too creatively, or one mysterious click from somewhere inside the wall.

So what is going on? Are some people just fussy sleepers?

Not really.

The truth is that your brain does not fully switch off when you sleep. Even while you are unconscious, part of your brain is still monitoring the world around you. It is listening for sounds that might matter: a baby crying, an alarm, a strange noise outside, or someone saying your name.

That is useful from a survival point of view. It is less useful when the “threat” is a possum on the roof or your neighbour putting the bins out at midnight.

One major difference between sleepers is something called arousal threshold. This is basically how much it takes to disturb your sleep. A person with a high arousal threshold may sleep through traffic, snoring, music, weather and general household chaos. A person with a low arousal threshold may be dragged towards wakefulness by much smaller sounds.

This does not always mean fully waking up, either. Noise can cause tiny disruptions in sleep that you may not remember the next morning. You might not think, “I woke up ten times last night,” but you may still feel flat, foggy or oddly unrested.

Another fascinating part of this story involves sleep spindles. These are brief bursts of brain activity that happen during certain stages of sleep. Researchers believe they may help the sleeping brain block or filter outside information. In simple terms, some brains may have better overnight “noise gates” than others.

That might explain why one person can sleep through a thunderstorm while another is awake, irritated and mentally composing a strongly worded complaint to the weather.

But biology is only part of it.

Stress also changes the way we hear the night. When your nervous system is on alert, small noises can feel bigger. If you are anxious, overtired, worried, or already frustrated about not sleeping, your brain can start treating every sound as important.

That is why a dripping tap is mildly annoying at 3 pm but somehow becomes a personal attack at 3 am.

Habit matters too. If you grew up sleeping in a noisy house, near traffic, or with siblings, you may have learned to tune out a lot of background sound. If you have spent years creating the perfect silent bedroom, your brain may have become beautifully, inconveniently trained to expect silence.

This is also why sudden sounds are often worse than steady sounds. A fan, rain app, air purifier or soft white noise may be easier to sleep through because it is predictable. The brain tends to dislike change. A single bark, slam, beep or cough can be more disruptive than a continuous background hum.

So what can you do if you are a silence-needing sleeper?

First, stop blaming yourself. Being sensitive to sound at night is not a character flaw. It is a mix of brain wiring, sleep depth, stress levels, habit and environment.

Second, aim for consistent sound, not necessarily perfect silence. Some people do well with earplugs. Others prefer a fan, white noise machine, soft music, rain sounds, or an air purifier. The goal is not to drown out the world completely. It is to reduce sudden changes in sound.

Third, lower your pre-sleep alertness. A tense brain is a listening brain. Gentle routines, dim lights, less scrolling, and a quieter wind-down period can make environmental noise feel less intrusive.

Finally, if noise sensitivity is part of a bigger sleep problem — long-term insomnia, anxiety, frequent waking, or daytime exhaustion — it may be worth speaking with a health professional. Sometimes the issue is not just the noise. It is that the brain has forgotten how to feel safe enough to sleep.

Some people really can sleep anywhere. Others need the bedroom equivalent of a recording studio.

Neither group is morally superior.

But if you are in the second group, there is good news: you may not need perfect silence. You may just need a calmer nervous system, a more predictable sound environment, and fewer 3 am arguments with the fridge.
